Third runway at Heathrow cleared for takeoff by ministers
The government has approved a third runway at Heathrow to expand UK airport capacity. Ministers approved the long-awaited decision at a cabinet committee meeting on Tuesday. Transport Secretary Chris Grayling called the decision "truly momentous" and said expansion would improve the UK's connections with the rest of the world and support trade and jobs. I actually thought Chris that the government would approve both. LGW being the quick win and LHR being the longer option.
Years overdue. There are lots of nice places all over England, so the 783 families whose home will be demolished, will have simply go away , quietly, and begin again elsewhere. Sounds cold, but these folks are not moving from Buckingham palace. Pay them well for their properties, but most likely not.
Wishing LGW was approved as well. Its so limited.
Move some of the flights that are multiple in number to some destinations from Heathrow toBirmingham, Manchester etc., leaving space at Heathrow for other international flights. Not everyone lives south of Watford. Add runways at Birmingham and Manchester if need be. More domestic flights around the country. We don't need HSR2 to save 20 minutes, this country is not big enough for high speed trains. They would have to put the brakes on soon after reaching a high speed. Leave the trains to deal with the towns and flights deal with the cities.

Good decision, at last! Because Heathrow functions as a hub, not just a destination, expanding London's other airports would not have led to any significant reduction in traffic. If I'm on a flight which is routed through London, it will never be acceptable to have to transit by road or rail from one airport to another.
