For Air Safety, 400 Geese Are Killed in Brooklyn's Prospect Park

Authorities have been thinning the region’s ranks of Canada geese since two of them flew into the engines of US Airways Flight 1549 in January 2009, forcing it to ditch in the Hudson River. Last summer, 1,200 were rounded up around the city. But the Prospect Park roundup appears to have been the single biggest episode. The goal is to eliminate all of the geese within seven miles of major area airports. Still, the scope of the Prospect Park episode mortified some of those who have grown fond of… (www.nytimes.com) المزيد...

I think they could have done this in a better manner. Did they real have to kill all the birds? It a genocide. This is on Par with the Germans attempt to remove the Jews from the fatherland. The only difference is that no one seam to be stopping them. Very sad

Bad PR move but I see the reasoning behind the removal. I just think the birds could have been donated to soup kitchens in the area.

Very sad, could have been handled very differently. I agree with both points......those birds could have fed a lot of people. It is sad, because I grew up hunting those birds, and you never killed one unless you were going to eat it. If I killed 400 birds either in season or out, the same people that did this would have me in jail. No sense to it, although I can also see the reasoning. Just wish they would have pinned the wings on some of the pairs, and left them there for the kids and families to enjoy. Better to take their ability to fly, then their entire life.

We have millions of people in the United States going hungry . The geese should have been processed and given to needy families....

How absurd to compare these geese to our brilliant and treasured ancestors in Germany... they are birds ( duh ) and these have become scavengers. They are also an obvious danger to aviation and a health hazard as well, with their droppings on our beaches and in out waterways. The migrating geese are beautiful and protected. Right on though about the food aspect.

This is downright stupid. Yes, waterfowl can be hazardous to low flying aircraft. But to round up geese and execute them in this manner strikes me as being just plain wrong. Couldn't they have been relocated since they were already captured?

You are right, but they should have been relocated or pushed to keep migrating years ago. They were permitted to become lazy and certain groups fought for their rights and sovereignty, so there you have it... self defeating over-population and disease spreaders. Are all those 'certain groups' happy now?

These brids do not respect FAA Regulations concerning Class B airspace. They all should be fitted with ATC Transponders and given codes at Tax payer expence.. Ha Ha .. They're Flying RATS..KILL'EM ALL and feed the hungery...

You guys have to be kidding Right? These geese are not indiginous to the lower forty eight on a year round basis. They have been habituated by the locals so that they stay year round now. Keep them for the kids? I am guessing that you have never stepped in their piles of poop that causes the numerous parks and beaches to be closed due to E-coli. As for feeding them to the homeless, thank the local Red Tape makers (PETA, Federal and Local Govt.'s) for making that not happen. These "Homeless" people have to be fed USDA and FDA approved food. These beasts might have some parasite that you would be infecting those people with according to them. Now for those that compare their demise to the rounding up of Jews by Nazis? Do you realize that in doing so you degrade the Jews of Germany that were killed as no more important as a "Goose"? So much for critical thinking. Why don't we poll the people on board Stillie's flight that landed in the Hudson to see how they feel about these Kamakazi water fowl? Bottom line...They are just BIRDS folks, not one of you are going to miss them tomorrow.

All I know is, I don't want to be in the air when one of them hit my aircraft. So get rid of them yes... Kill them in droves, i'm not so sure....
