New Arrival, Departure System Causing Delays At LAX
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — A new arrivals and departure procedures at Los Angeles International Airport are causing delays Monday morning. Some arriving flights are now running more than an hour late after the airport had to deliberately slow down its system due to the new, satellite-based arrival and departure tracking. The new system phases out decades-old radar technology and will eventually make air travel faster. But pilots and air traffic controllers have to get used to the changes. These new procedures were in the March 2 issue, and the RDHLL1 Departure is shorter, quicker and makes good use of non-crowded airspace compared to ANAHM8. DSNEE1 Arrival and ANJLL1 have great waypoint names! Good thinking, ATC, on all counts!
Being an ATC guy in Socal sounds like FUN! First, the RW25R construction at LAX and now a bunch of new SIDs and STARs. I remember when DFW went through this a number of years ago. It all works out in the end, I guess.
LAX has been ground delayed so everyone can "go slow" and figure out WTF.....if you are a passenger toward LAX in the next few days, you are a guinea pig! Basically, the delays are everyone everywhere all day long. And, oh, it is perfectly clear today.
