I've never understood why the tank hangs below the fuselage. It seems there should have been plenty of space in the cargo area of the plane to fit that inside.
CherokeePAX: According to information about the aircraft, the external tank mitigates center-of-gravity issues. It also allows quick refills of the retardant tanks from ground sources.
