MAGNA — A paramotor aircraft went down near Saltair Monday evening injuring its operator, officials say.
The Unified Fire Authority received a call about a plane crash about 7:35 p.m., according to officials. It was later determined to be a paramotor aircraft that had crashed in the parking lot of the Great Saltair.
Unified Police Lt. Manfred Lassig said a nurse happened to be in the area and was able to quickly render aid to the 65-year-old operator.
Paramedics said the man was expected to live and was even speaking when he was treated at the scene. He was flown by medical helicopter to a nearby hospital with multiple compound fractures, Lassig said.
A paramotor aircraft is similar to a paraglider aircraft, according to OutdoorTroop.com, but a paramotor uses a fan to propel it forward whereas a paraglider does not.
Lassig said the operator was newer to this type of flying. The lieutenant advised citizens to bring people with them when flying an aircraft they're unfamiliar with.
Correction: A previous version reported the man's age as 50 years old. Police on scene said he is 65.
