Back in earlier days, when using the R4D's and the P2's, we watched them blast off, using the JATO bottles:-)
our runway is now over 7000ft and as can be seen from the youtube video that I took it only needed 2/3rds of it although once in the air rate of climb was very slow. Then it had to do a 180 degree right turn low over the city to put it on course for the Southern Ocean area.
The JATO bottles were a real treat. They commonly carried more than required and would often fly back over the airport firing up the spares much to the huge crowd's delight
