US airports can opt-out of TSA

تم الإرسال

Did you know that the nation's airports are not required to have Transportation Security Administration screeners checking passengers at security checkpoints? The 2001 law creating the TSA gave airports the right to opt out of the TSA program in favor of private screeners after a two-year period. Now, with the TSA engulfed in controversy and hated by millions of weary and sometimes humiliated travelers, Rep. John Mica, the Republican who will soon be chairman of the House Committee on… (www.washingtonexaminer.com) المزيد...

If an airport authority opts out of TSA, does Janet Napolitano come and grope the airport president?

Wow, that's fascinating. It's easy to imagine a commercial airport in a competitive market or a dominant airline in a hub city motivated to displace the TSA in a bid to attract passengers.

It is interesting that the United States government (lower case "g") thinks profiling is a violation of rights, yet don't mind taking naked pictures of and/or groping citizens.

I've been told SFO does not have TSA Agents. They're actually contractors that wear the old white TSA type uniforms with "Contractor" on the uniform.

Driving is for getting to the airport if you don't have a helicopter.

People can make the comments of just stay home, or take the bus or train, but lets not forget that it is our right to fly. Many travelers don't have any options but to fly. And its really ok to just tell people to stay home and not go on their family vacation or not to travel for their last minute business meeting? Can you take a bus or train to all the cities served by all the airlines? Do these buses and trains cross the oceans? No. Nor is it legal for anyone to touch a persons private area except for that person and their doctor. Now we need to add TSA to that list? I know some people buy into this false sense of security, but I am not one of them.

Remember your rights end where another person's rights begin. Besides flying is NOT a right, it is an option. There are other travel alternatives to flying. Oh, right but you don't want to be inconvenienced.

So it is my decision. If I don't want to be "groped" I don't fly.

I think the US Constitution (article 4, privileges and immunities) and US Supreme Court disagree with you, GalinHdz.

We as a nation are being conditioned to accept all sorts of impositions on our personal liberties. I submit that while the intention to provide a more secure travel environment is laudable, the imprementation is unacceptable. I personally like the AIT scanners in limited use as a "Secondary" screening method IF you have a person that pops up on a watch list or if using the behavior observation technique as implemented by the Israeli security services. By no means should every traveller be subjected to it nor to the invasive and degrading grope search.

Does all of this make me feel more secure? Nope. Not a bit. It does make me fear my own government though and that is something that bears serious consideration by one and all.

The Orlando Sanford Airport (KSFB) now plans to replace Transportation Security Administration screeners with private contractors.

Look, I'm a CFI. I'll teach you to fly if you live in the Seattle area, or otherwise have a LOT of money for me to either fly to where you are (I don't fly on Part 121 air carriers) or for you fly to Seattle. I fly all the time in light aircraft and never have to take my shoes or belt off, or have my naked body get digitally recorded, or be subjected to TSA screeners groping my genitals. If you fly general aviation aircraft, you don't have to put up with this stuff. Seriously, think about it. Learn to fly, or fly general aviation charter. Save yourself, your loved ones, and your friends and clients the humiliation...FLY GENERAL AVIATION!

"Remember: The underwear bomber the terror watch list." Yes, but if the TSA wasn't so focused on stripping people of their rights and for that matter their clothes, maybe they could devote more time to profiling people. Obviously the screening in place at the airport terminal didn't work in the case of the underwear bomber.

There is not a lick of consistency with TSA. A vote for IAH by all employees brought them in but I think many Americans who come through feel their consitutional rights are at risk. You are asked to never respond to them without the FBI being threatened to talk to you. Freedom of Speech ceases to exist and the TSA institute "overkill" when it comes to handling situations in a professional exist. They are not active problem solvers.

Even if airports opt for contract screeners, they still have to follow TSA guidelines. An example is SFO. When TSA started, SFO was allowed to use contract screeners as a test. As a former TSA officer I understand everyone's frustration over the new procedures, but we can't go back to the "good ole days".

Wonder why? Wonder why people are willing to get naked and their probed in a Dr.'s office who knows them, know their address, know their phone number, etc. which would allow them to be a potential prey to a Dr? TSA agents do not know any of the travelers, or where they are from, or any personal data. So when comparing the 2 situations.......what is the big deal. At the same time I also wonder why cargo is not inspected or checked? TSA says because they are being shipped by confirmed shippers. Oh yeah??????? The shipper maybe confirmed shipper but who was the packer of the package? Is a faceless person somewhere in the USA of any business is less terrorist then a documented traveler? This entire process and TSA needs to be tossed out and re-think. It is just plain laughable anymore. The longer we are at it the worst it gets. My suggestion: have the local police of a person do a background check on the person, submit it to the state department and have everyone be issued a passport afterwards. Now the person is a certified (as best the police can determine) safe traveler. Each person should be compelled to travel only with the passport. NO PASSPORT = NO TRAVEL by any method of transportation. End of searches.

While it is true that an airport has the option to either use TSA screeners or hire private contractors the screening process follows a strict federal guideline and will be the same.
If you wish to fly commercially you will adhere to the screening process.
This is an effort to further deter those who would wish to do us harm and should be embraced.
As stated numerous times if you don’t like it don’t fly commercially.

Part 91 or part 135 flights have no such requirements.

We get naked in front of a doctor or nurse for our health. Why not do the same for out safety in the air?

To those that say ... suck it up and/or drive... you realize that you support the terrorists more when you drive due to the oil burn .... or better yet ... lets have your daughter/son, wife, mother, grandmother get groped right in front of you weekly ... then lets see what you have to say ...

Also ... usually folks that say that the majority don't actually use the services ... I fly weekly, and have "sucked" it up ... realizing my "search and seizure rights" were being violated ... and I do it because I have no choice because I do have to work ...

Lets's face it, the TSA is a dog and pony show to try and convince the flying public that they're supposedly safe. Let's face it, the next terrorist act involving a plane will likely originate from outside the US anyways, and even if the TSA makes you strip buck ass naked, the terrorists are walking in the back door while your junk is getting wanded.

Frankly, I LIKE getting groped. The new policies may very well get me to fly more often.

The way I see it, regardless of whether it is the TSA or a contractor, the problem is the procedure.
There is a radio-wave scanner that essentially does the same thing the current scanners do, but without the radiation. Why did the Feds buy this version... follow the money and you'll see who has monetary interests in OSI. // Wait until the Muslims complain, then this groping will go away. For the rest of us... none of our complaints will be listened to.

I say, lets get a class action suit against Southwest airlines for false advertising with their slogan, " Feel Free to move about the Country" claiming we don't feel free to move about the country with all the TSA fauxcurity procedures. That should get SWA's lawyers and lobbyist moving in Washington and on the individual airport committees to modify or ban TSA policies or move to private security. It stinks that how things have to be done now a days, but it could be effective!

If you read the law, the private screeners are required to meet or exceed TSA's level of invasiveness. 49 USC 44920

The idea of opting out is nothing more than a red herring.

If it means we can travel safe, I'll take a little inconvenience. It's not the inconvenience that's the problem. It's the fact that I always run into some "Dirty Harry" wanna be who's failed his local law enforcement exam so instead chooses to take it out on me and my family.

The private security firms would still have to follow TSA SOP.

Airports can opt out? Not when $ are involved they won't. If none opt out it'd be evidence the Feds threatened cutting that airport's budget. We'll see.

TSA is a high payed morons with the lack of common scence. They lack professionalim, common courtesy and respect to the public.
