What You Need to Know About Turbulence

تم الإرسال

Countless travelers have experienced the distinct anxiety-inducing sensation of turbulence on flights: Eyes squeezed shut, hands clamped to the armrests for dear life, bracing for the roller coaster to come. Recent incidents have left dozens of passengers with injuries. Last month, seven passengers on a Lufthansa flight from Texas to Frankfurt were hospitalized with minor injuries after their plane encountered severe turbulence as it flew over Tennessee. And in December, about two dozen people,… (www.nytimes.com) المزيد...

Most disconcerting announcement from the flightdeck - approaching Glasgow one stormy December pre-dawn: "I should like to assure passengers that the weather conditions are entirely within the operational capability of this aircraft."

For me: November 1978: Flight from Tokyo to Moscow (which is a long way south and east of Leningrad): pilot comes on with peremptory announcement in Russian followed by shorter version in English: "Emergency landing. Leningrad".

Pointless to post any item from the New York Times. One cannot read it without a subscription to the paper. If one clicks on the news item the NYT puts up a screen soliciting a subscription.

I agree 100%. If FlightAware gets a NYT article they should NOT put it on the daily email. This happens a lot on the EarlyBird website for military news only it's Stars & Stripes newspaper that puts up the paywall. Booooo

That's what really disturbs me. The Stars and Gripes I have to pay for? Okay, I think I used to pay a quarter during the week and 50 cents on Sunday for the comics. Really, I would get the Sras and Gripes just to read the local editorial section. LOL, don't get me started on AFRTS.

read the article and you will know why it is in the NYT...it perpetuates the orthodoxy....the NYT is a political organization not a source for news and information unless you practice that religion...

Political yes, at least be truthful. NYT is the most corrupt newspaper ever.

People on the right don't accept facts or science they don't "agree" with. Facts are facts. The truth is the truth. You don't get to have an "opinion" on them. NYT is a very good resource for people looking for facts.

Well, I can't argue that one way or the other. Only thing I've ever gone to the NYT for is the crossword puzzles. However, I will say this, political bent or no, there is likely to be a fair amount of factual data.

The only thing passengers need to know about turbulence is……it happens, light/moderate/heavy/extreme sometimes without any warning. Simple Solution…….keep your fu#&%&g seat belt fastened at all times.

Far as I can tell, even pilots can have political opinions, Scott. Sometimes, no matter the topic, other subjects get introduced. We're just simple folk.

Thanks to those who posted the non-paywalled version.

Nothing new here, though the points about remaining belted and not carrying kids on laps are well taken. I think most passengers would be surprised to learn what severe turbulence feels like. YouTube is full of videos purporting to show it, when in actuality the aircraft probably only experienced light or moderate chop. In my experience, most commercial pilots do a good job warning passengers when they are able and letting them know how long to expect a rough ride.

TURBULENCE is ususally unexexpected, and if by chance the captain feels they might encoundter it, he tells the crew,no servce at this time, stay strapped in, and also advises the poassengers...when its unexpected,as in the middle of a long haul flight and everyone has unbuckled, gotten comfortable, and started to "roam the cabin" or go to the lavatory, then it really serious!captains always take available routes that avoid thunderstorms or any possiblilty of turbulence, but sometimes mother nature has other ideas!

It's just as well a lot of us can't read it - the NYT is so biased and does NOT give accurate information, not based on FACTS ...
Let's stick to accurate scientific information please FlightAware ....
And God Bless pilots who work hard every day to make travelers safe and comfortable .... in some of the worst conditions ......
