Need ATC permission to enter controlled airspace. You're still required to adhere to individual countries airspace rules.
Many friendly countries require permission for overflights in their airspace.
Isn't Indonesian airspace WAY OFF course if flying to HK from Ethiopia??!
Agreed. Perhaps he was flying the "Lesser Circle" route?
