Pilots using grass strips have to make sure the landing area is clear, same as floatplanes do for water landings. A low pass in essential in both circumstances to signal intent to land.

She could have been wearing sound-deafening earphones or ear plugs due to her occupation; perhaps an OSHA requirement for landscaping services.

Aurally she may have not have heard, however when operating that close to the strip with a mower it would be extremely hard to miss visually an aircraft doing a low fly-by as an alert to an impeding landing. Although not required at unlicensed aerodrome, there are certain elements that do require training. Very unfortunate accident.

What if her back was to the aircraft?

Then her front would face the aircraft as it went by. I can’t believe you asked that question?

I’m referring to a fly by not the landing itself.

I spent many ours doing runway maintenance with a tractor pulling a mower and a roller on a grass strip when I was a teenager. Even though it has been many years, this story hits strangely close to home.

My sincere condolences to the young lady and her family.

It’s just so sad, I had no idea such a thing was even possible.

How do you not see a person on a mower? Did he try to land over her and misjudge? Even in the event of an emergency landing you have no right to endanger others on the ground with your problem. Land off airport. Tragic.

Pilots fault as stated below.. must over fly uncontrolled airfields to be sure its clear to land on.. RIP for the lady and her family.

It just begs investigation of course, and my heart goes out to All involved in this tragic accident.
Danger is always present when you have planes & People no matter how hard we try to make rules for safety.

I wonder if she was wearing earphones and listening to music? I encounter this on trails all the time.

Highly likely I am thinking. ANR headsets and airpods are very good at reducing sound pressure but not so good for maintaining awareness of danger
