Trump brings back supersonic flight To US skies
For over half a century, the skies above America have been stuck in the slow lane. Since 1973, when the FAA banned civilian supersonic flight over U.S. soil, the dream of blazing across the country at Mach speeds has been grounded. But on June 6, 2025, President Donald Trump signed an executive order that’s set to rip up that outdated rulebook, green lighting supersonic flight once again. Great news. Oklahoma City was the test bed for booms in the early 60s. As a young Jr High student, we would look up when a boom went off to see if we could spot the plane. I'm not sure how my parents liked it, but to a young man growing up going to the FAA Center, Tinker, and finally NASA, it was an exciting time to be alive.
Interesting... Been a long time since I have heard a good Sonic Boom Flying over!
I grew up in West Germany in the 60s, 70s and early 80s. Sonic booms were a daily occurrence and nobody was bothered by it.
With the sound mitigation that NASA and the private sector have been working on, most people won't ever be aware of the supersonic flights high above them.

The sound of the boom means freedom to explore.
Decades ago when on a family trip through the Badlands, we must have been there when they were running supersonic tests- most likely from Ellsworth AFB. So low and fast- we could barely jerk our heads around fast enough to even glimpse the plane as it shot past us -- - - - -then silence------- and then ccccrrrrrrrrrraaacccKKKK the sonic boom. Awesome!
Just gotta have more toys for the one-percenters to play with..!
