Penalties increase for flashing lasers at planes

The Federal Aviation Administration will consider someone who hits a plane with a laser to be "interfering" with a flight crew, the same statute used to protect pilots and flight attendants from hijackers, the agency said it will announce today. The agency has no authority to prosecute violators criminally, but it can charge them under civil statutes and assess fines up to $11,000. Last year, the FAA received 2,836 reports that planes were hit with lasers, nearly double the total in… (www.usatoday.com) المزيد...

That's great, but now they need to actually enforce it and levy these penalties. People are just walking away laughing as it is. Pitiful.

@ZACH unless they get caught red handed kinda hard to pick them up and prosecute them. that is how i see it. they need to make it a criminal act and bring the full brunt of the federal government down on them. put one in jail for 20 years, a federal joint, no good time, i think that sh** would stop in a heartbeat.

@TTail I totally agree with everything you've said. Sacrifice one so every other jerk will fear the reprisals.

Who the hell came up with $11,000...why not $111,000. Nevertheless, aiming lasers at planes is just asinine...when they catch the idiots, they should just stop the gene pool NOW!

I've had this happen to me coming into ellington field in houston. Definitely glad I was flying with someone else that night.

Please forgive my ignorance, I am no a pilot so I have no comprehension of the cockpit.

As for the laser, are we talking the over the counter laser-pen type lasers, or something different?

How does it affect the cockpit? I can only imagine what it can do if it hits the pilot's eye sight!

And why isn't it criminal - they are jeopardizing people's lives are they not?

As others see it, if the laser is strong enough to blind a pilot, even temporarily, the act should be criminal. As far as I see it, this is an attempt to kill someone.

WHY WOULD ANYONE SHINE A LASER OR TRY TO DISTRACT A PILOT FOR KICKS N GRINS? What is the world coming to?
