Supersonic—The Origins of Concorde

تم الإرسال

Twenty-eight years before two tunnel boring machines broke through bedrock deep under the English Channel, a team of British and French engineers set to work on a no less audacious project: building a supersonic commercial aircraft. Concorde would prove to be one of the most complex and challenging commercial aviation projects ever undertaken. (airchive.com) المزيد...

Sad that such a bird will mostly be remembered for the last crash and none of it's achievements

That was the best of Brit engineering. For years it had tyre problems. Despite the fact that Michelin had the tech they did SFA about uprating them. NADA..the was nothing wrong with that machine as it was retired. Very annoying.

what if new engines were designed, incorporating existing air frames? So adding in speed, freight, seat revue to ensure a profitable trans-atlantic flight? Seems like the number of business associates willing to pay the high price of JFK-LHR could sustain a high cost aircraft like the Concord.

There are plenty of high value passengers flying between New York and Lindon. So they're not gone for lack of passengers willing to pay a premium to fly that route.

It was just too expensive to operate. It costs much less to take twice as long to carry passengers across the Atlantic, so the profits are much better without the Concorde flying.

Technology doesn't always have any regard for economics. We have been to the moon too..........

If it weren't for economics, every passenger flight could be at Mach 2 or better. But most if us wouldn't want to pay for it. We'd rather just get to our destination at a more reasonable fare.

If the only other subsonic reasonably priced transportation is bus or train, subsonic flight is ok by most.

The XB-70 wasn't designed as a people carrier - a bomber which didn't last. The reason the Concorde systems became antiquated and recommended safety issues were not implemented was because apart from a very short few months it made a loss over it's lifetime. Pride reigned over projected/forecast economic viability and they forged ahead despite this. There is no intended replacement as the money is in passenger affordable large and mid size aeroplanes and neither Boeing, Airbus or any other aircraft manufacturer will invest in risky no return project of the type. The Concorde was innovative and stood as the only mach2 commercial people carrier of it's kind designed from 1968 and in service in the mid 70's for 27 years.

Here's an article I have heard rumors of that offers some more data that doesn't seem to be in the main stream stuff. A bit long in the comments section, but you don't have to read it. It has always been my contention that the first gotcha doesn't usually get the professional, but the third or fourth might.

French made?

Either Dunlop..Brits...or Michelin ..French. 1965 designs. All along the service life thay had probs with the tyres. Don't get me started on this subject..I get annoyed. They had the tech to upgrade at least 15 years before the final accident. A lot of close calls...they did frick all..both Brits and French. Goodyear or Bridgestone could easily have prevented this accident. Sheer stupidity and gutless people more interested in petty politics...I just wish I coulda had them up agin the wall and dislocated their necks. Excuse me..but..

Didn't mean to get your BP up. Better a beverage. It's about that time in your neck of the woods.

Overweight, 10 knot tail wind, started run over area of tarmac assigned for resurfacing, missing spacer. Possibly could have made it if the engineer did not shut down the engine too soon. Went off track well before the metal strip in question which was malleable to any shape, including a tyre rip that the metal would also would have been somewhat squashed. As usual photos proving the runway marks were conveniently missing from the investigation and the strip was found where...just happened to not blow off the runway in blasts from the engines or wind but sitting on tarmac right where it needed to be, staying in a vertical position throughout the accident when "run over". OK I believe it.

The reason why this happneded was that the tyres were of a 1965 design and contruction.

Ths rest is circumstantial. As for the rest of you machine minders who believe you are dieties who disagree..well...my weimaraner has more about him than you pretentious pimps ever will.

I don't like you either..but since I am bigger than you, and that is about all you understand..you will just have to suck up.

No need to turn...smaller air port just 3 miles ahead of them

North American XB-70 Valkyrie was the first Mach 3 of its kind in 1964. It was retired in 1969 and the controls gutted from it. Far earlier than Concorde.

USA always was far ahead. USAers don't have the attitude of the French or the Brits...when a job needs doing USAers just do it.
