"Obama's proposal would scale back a tax break enjoyed by private jet owners. The tax increase would raise $3 billion over the next decade."

tax breaks and subsidies = socialism

"...now he is trying to destroy one that is asking for nothing more than to let us be and to let us grow," Pompeo said.

That's it? How about the tens of millions you spend on lobbying members of congress?

Obama needs to be out of office now. If anything like this get through his loopholes then aviation will be hurting. If he sees people making money he wants to make sure that he gets his fair share that way he doesnt have to pay for his b-day bash.

Union Officials?? Now just where are the remarks from the union officials in this article? O I forgot they donate to BO for his re election while he tries to eliminate their jobs. Hmmm just like the coal miners union? Give me money and I will eliminate your industry. Go figure?

I guess B.O. needs to think about where he is before he opens his trap. Maybe he could do a little research and learn more about our country. Hopefully he is digging his own political grave.

Anyone have any facts here? What is the nature of this tax change? The article doesn't include any.

The stupid...still burning.

@Pa - What is being discussed here is an accelerated depreciation that is currently allowed for ALL large capital expenditures by businesses fo things like machinery, plant equipment, large construction equipment, and yes - business jets. Instead of making companies depreciate the cost of such investments, it allows a complete write oof in the first year after the purchase. It "allows" this acceleration, if companies choose to do so. The kicker is that the equipment will eventually be written off (deducted) as an expense from the company's profits eventually, so in the long run, the tax revenue increase will be negligible. By revoking the accelerated depreciation provision the government is only moving tax collections into the nearer term at the expense of the demand in capital equipment which provides jobs at companies like Hawker-Beechcraft, Cessna, Gulfstream, Caterpillar etc. It is a symbolic , political gesture at best, and a completely wrong-headed, ignorant economic policy down where people really live.
Do a YouTube search for Warren Buffett's comments on MSNBC this week about the business ramifications of the proposed tax changes. He's BO supporter, but a damn smart business man (plus he owns NetJets) so he knows a thing or two.

And Matt........do we have to do this again? Really? his bean counters don't take into account the LOST tax revenue from all the JOBS that will be lost by this plan. Not to mention the INCREASED COST in unemployment payments and all the rest. As our old friend Sir Isaac said "for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction". Nothing happens in a vaccuum.

President Obama was the author of the bill back in 2008 creating the tax break/incentive for people buying corporate jets.

Well, I don't know about anybody yet; being from Arkansas, I'm disappointed that Huck didn't run again. Sad part of it all is that Fleagle is probably right and it will eventually be Dictator Barack

And dictator Obama does? Well, maybe he'll give you a job washing HIS private jet, and let you live in a government apartment, and shop at the government grocery, and drive a GM (that would be "Government Motors") electric car. And if you ask really nice, he MIGHT let you off early (7:00PM) one Friday to visit your dad in the government nursing home (if they let him live that long).
C'mon Matt, you're smarter than that.

I have a job, but thanks, Brian. Can't we agree to disagree? Half the country will always disagree with each other, we don't have to make it personal! I'm not trying to convert you! :)

Matt: it is one thing to disagree, and there is plenty of fault and blame for both parties, but our country and way of life is being destroyed from within. It may have started back yonder somewhere but has definitely been accelerated by BHO and crew. There needs to be a change in 2012 but for the current crop that's out there, D or R, don't seem to be a name there that excites me or anyone else for that matter.

Ironic to hear the user of the planet's most expensive corporate jet engage in this idiotic pandering. wonder if the Democratic party reimburses the taxpayer for candidate Obama's use of Air Force 1 when he conveniently drops in on East Bumf##k Iowa for a fund raising luncheon and flips back to Washington to his desk for the afternoon? Hypocrisy in the extreme.
the sooner mankind learns to get around the planets with the same ease as we fly across the country, the better our chance of survival as a species. and corporate aviation is an important part in developing this ability.

Matt. I didn't mean to be personal, my comments were really intended to be rhetorical. We have very serious issues facing our country. Wayne spoke the truth about our way of life being destroyed from within, and I'm afraid you're just plain wrong about the solutions. And I AM trying to convert you. Stop by GMU sometime and I'll buy you a burger and a beer at the Runway Cafe!

Obama is the biggest hypocrite in chief that the people have ever elected. In the last 3 months he has used AF1 to attend 31 fund raisers. He made "official" visits so the taxpayers would foot the entire bill for all the trips. Obama is a despicable human being.
nealdavis4
Neal Davis 0
@Robert: Incumbent presidents have a long history of using AF1 as their personal campaign platform... Bush Jr. did it and so did Reagan. Were they despicable human beings, too?

I don't see why everyone is so upset here, we are witnessing the greatest redistribution of wealth the good ole USofA has ever seen. Just think for a minute that those of us that have worked tirelessly and taken enormous risk in the advancement of our personal lives and agendas, we will all be taken care of if the Confiscator in Chief gets his way. I hope that Nov 2012 we can throw him one huge "going away" party. Whose jet will we fly him back to MDW on? How about a B200? Isn't that an approbate mission? I bet Hawker/Beech would donate one for the flight.....

I tell you what, everybody remember that in spite of everything, the last election was real close. Granted he has spent a lot of time getting people in his camp but I am hoping that the silent majority will have had enough and not be silent in 2012. If they don't, he will definitely get reelected.

@Neal, Thank you for COMPLETELY missing the point. Like a typical liberal you just can't grasp the obvious. Obama wants to take away the private jet subsidy while he uses AF1 as a private jet.

53% Obama 45.7% McCain... That's not really "real close" Wayne! We're talking 9,500,000 votes difference!

I agree Wayne. We've become so ignorant, we'll elect anybody who makes a good speech even if they are an empty suit when it comes to effective leadership and understanding of economics.

Well, Matt/Brian: Matt, it sure wasn't a landslide and being new, I think a lot of folks sat out or may have even voted for him to give him a chance and see what he could do. This is another argument that can be debated til the Lord comes again. He now has a record, which he did not have when first elected, and on that record and his performance he will be judged in 2012. I did not vote for him when he ran the first time, primarily based on the fact that he had no real experience. I will not vote for him in 2012 because most of what he has done shows that I was right with my first vote.

Here Again, as in the past, when the auto makers were bashed for flying to D.C. Why are not the users and manufacturers making an effort to educate the public as well as the lawmakers about the "time is money" aspect of business flight. OR, is the bickering/campaigning for office the REAL issue.
nealdavis4
Neal Davis 0
@Robert: I'm actually a moderate Republican, and I am completely against Obama's plan to do away with accelerated depreciation. I was just playing devil's advocate... However, I think your response underscores what I believe is really destroying this country - partisanship and political polarization (lack of accountability, lack of unified vision, and lack of compromise also go on the list, but you didn't demonstrate that in your response).

Until we elect politicians that are willing to put aside differences, make tough decisions, take accountability for their mistakes, and work towards a common goal (what, incidentally, is our common goal?), we will continue down this destructive path.
