This 787 has been sitting at San Jose Airport for 2 days due to a faulty generator. (flightaware.com) المزيد...

Planes break. Shocker.

A new plane shouldn't break down this much. How many faulty generators have their been for the 787?

Good thing it's not an Airbus. All hell would've broken loose.

that's the age we live in now....build/make it cheaper and sale for more

I would like to inform you that Airbus is no more perfect than Boeing. I would like to point out that Boeing currently has a higher average service life for their aircraft than Airbus. What does that say about build quality?

It has nothing to do with quality, Airbus has never designed their planes to last longer than Boeing's. Their biggest point of sale is a way cheaper price than Boeing, but the down side of it is a shorter service life. And John was not wrong, if this was a Airbus aircraft the people on here would act like the freakin' sky was falling. For Boeing it's "teething issues", for Airbus it's the end of the world.

I never said Airbus is more perfect. I didn't even say Airbus is better than Boeing. All I stated was perfectly put by JetMech24, "For Boeing it's "teething issues", for Airbus it's the end of the world."

That's exactly why we're once again discussing another simple 787 mx issue, when an A380 that depressurized, dropped thousands of feet in altitude with oxygen masks dropped got much less than the deserved discussion.

Frequently, you get mx diversions that get played on the news sensationalizedly. You might get a backup AC pack get reported reported as 'pressurization issue' and 'emergency landing' when all that happened was a diversion for a simple mc issue.

In the recent SIA A380, they actually had a full-blown depressurization at cruise altitude despite ample reason for an mx diversion from the start of the flight and the previous one too.

Yet the serious A380 issue gets little press. And here we are all again either slamming or defending the 787. Really? Again?

And some want to pretend the reverse.

[BTW anyone know what happened with that SIA A380? Sucks when it's an Airbus that has an issue. They are so good at getrin people to shut up. Even worse when the diversion is to a far away corner of the world with little outside journalist coverage. Even worse when the history of location includes the Soviet bloc sphere of influence.

They must work for Toyota!!

It seems ironic that ANA1076 doesn't have mechanic support at an airport where they have landed before. If they knew this, why didn't they divert to LAX or another airport where they would have mechanics on duty. This is an ANA problem, not Boeing,

Who knows with all this globalization of parts and pieces of aircraft construction today. Who makes the generator? China, Germany, Japan or is it down in South America. This is the results of outsourcing all our manufacturing to countries who can make it cheaper, which guarantees more failures!

That seems to be the trade off companies make when they outsource component design and production. Although you set out specs and guidance, you have no real control til you get the finished product, and hope it fits and functions as set forth. Actually, outsourced parts/components require a lot more cost and oversight to get exactly what you wanted, sometimes costing more than if it were done in-house.

Keep in mind that when sourcing a mechanic, you have to have someone that is trained on your equipment.... When a crew has a problem they should follow the QRH. If the QRH says nearest suitable, then that is where they go. If no Maintenance is available, then they have to 2 problems. Getting a company mechanic to them, and getting escort for their mechanics. Also, they will most likely need too get parts too them which means shipping parts or sourcing from a company certified vender. If Vender A is approved and has no part and Vender B has the part but not on the company approved list.... the part is no good.

How do we know it's a faulty generator?

Faulty Generator... Sounds like they have Trouble Shot it to make that bold of an answer, but it could be a GCU, Contactor, or even as simple as an indication issue. Further more to be technical, it does not have a Generator, it has an IDG. The difference is the Generator is a Stand Along Unit, the IDG is the Integrated Generator to the Constant Speed Drive. Much more efficient when it comes to R&R, but to the pilot there is no operational difference.

I meant that, yeah, a plane is stuck at SJC but is there some other info that it's an electronics problem?

I'm familiar with this 'all-electric' airplane and some of the problems in the aft E&E bay that would control the IDGs. Is the APU kaput? One of the engines?
sparkie624
sparkie624 1
If you have a working APU and APU Gen you can defer the Generator/IDG, but not for over water flight as an ETOPS a/c.

Generator design is a scientific as well as a black art. The 787 generators are far larger than other aircraft because more systems are using electric power rather than bleed air to carry out their tasks. While the scientific art is well practiced, the black art is not for aircraft generators used at altitude that are that large. There are also mechanical considerations that will need further refinement as time goes on.

I would like to see Boeing station spares around the world for quick change whole piece service protocol. This would allow failed units to be brought to the factory for remanufacture and discover the common failure modes. Then field service kits could be provided to allow rapid field repair. That would serve Boeing and clients at the highest level.

Just an update on the airplane. It is on its way to PANC, stopping there, then going to RJCC

It seems strange to me that this is the only airplane in the world with a mechanical problem that has caused it to be grounded. It must be, or we would be reading about it - would't we? Come on, why is the Boeing 787 being picked on when we know that other airplanes have mechanical problems that never make the news. These airplanes make many successful flights every day so it's time to stop picking on them over every little incident.

This plane is stuck on the ground because they cannot get mechanics to fix it.. Article is hardly news worthy.

I could care less about if they are in the news or not... I just think that putting this item in the news because they have a Generator Problem is BS. If that is the case I could get dozens of articles on Generator Related issues, and that is just on one regional airline.
