This guy nails it!

This is the most beautiful, technically perfect, serious X-wind landing I have seen in a long time. (twitter.com) المزيد...

I'm not nearly as impressed. He was still not lined up with the runway at the time of touchdown and dragged all three sets of wheels sideways at quite an angle.

And had he not done all those thing you said, he would have landed in the weeds Torsten! You know not whereof you speak!

He could have lined up left of centerline and let the aircraft drift with the crosswind. He also could have used rudder just before touchdown to straighten out and used aileron to keep the upwind wing level.

Thanks for the downvote. I did not return the favor. He could have diverted, but, the x-wind was seemingly steady state, he was capable and this ain't part 91. Crab to a slip with pylon mounted engines in a gale can result in engine smashes. Look up Kai Tak on u tube. This guy touched down in the crab, ruddered the nose AND unloaded the wing as the nose aligned with the runway. Thus, less side load on the gear than you suspect, and certainly no hard landing. He rolled out on the centerline. It's called timing. And well beyond the capabilities of more than a few ATP's, let alone FA commenters.

I believe the pilot just flew it crabbed right through the flare and let it land in the crab. That method puts a lot of sideways stress which luckily the 75 has a strong gear. Not a big fan of this method as the FA’s in the back get smacked around pretty good, however, the old stretch 8 was a bear in a good crosswind and at 7 degrees of bank you tagged an engine. We just bought drinks for the back end after something like that! A dry runway with a firm touchdown will straighten up the plane pretty quick though!

I'm not a big fan of preaching to the choir, but you are not the average choir boy around here and certainly not the only one who will read it. If I read your tea leaves correctly You might have pulled this technique off once or twice in an "old stretch 8". I'd say he did exactly that, and I agree completely about the sideload stress put on the gear, but transport category airplanes have pretty beefy gear and wing box structure for things like this. And maybe guys who don't always have their best day with a 25 knt. x-wind. This guy probably had Boeings 30 knt. demonstrated x-wind limitation in his ops. specs., thus, if true, the landing was illegal. However, he chose to land with a 40 knt. x-wind component, stuck the landing and rolled out on the centerline. I won't say that what he did was right, or legal, just that I can't imagine another way to do it with the same result, let alone better, more than once. Crab to slip with Any real flare would run out of aileron, rudder and runway if that upwind gear didn't touch down pretty quickly after you started the transition to the slip. And tag an outboard engine with an old stretch 8, much tougher to get the timing right. Who do you think bought the drinks after the Chief Pilot saw this video? Cheers.
