That should be interesting if it ever happens.

Interesting.. Glad to see United Growing in Dulles... Working for a United Regional, we do a lot of flying there.. I hope this works to benefit all.

Remember the temporary G gates?

That has be sometime ago... But I also remember when they first stated using the portable jet ways... Load everyone on, drive to the plane, Raise it up and let them board! That has been a few years ago... For those who are an old enough to remember when that started!

We used to live in Clifton under the northbound approach to IAD. Plane spotting from the hot tub. We've since moved to TPA and just had to fly to VA for a wedding connecting through IAD. The people movers at still in use as we used one to go from the C concourse on United mainline to A gates for our United Express connection. Those things were state of the art in 1972... :-)

Some things never change. I used to fly in and out of there while I was stationed in England and Germany. Once I became a flight attendant for Trans States and we took on United Express flying, we staged out of "Delay Us" Not much has changed between 1990 to 2006.

The G gates lasted from '04 to '06 if I remember right. I thought they were still using the mobile jet ways for the remote gates.

The G gates always reminded me of a Greyhound bus station.

Lol, me too. I would announce that to my pax before we landed. G stand for Greyhound. We also called them ghetto gates.

I remember! This may have even appeared on a motion picture back in the day. Maybe one of the "Airplane" disaster movies?

Might have been Airport.

Well, I hope it improves SOMETHING there. As a frequent customer, the experience of the United/Dulles combo has never, EVER been without some serious problem. Here are but three examples.

A) There was a fiasco in late '07 where Dulles Airport authority staged, yes, I repeat, STAGED a security breach. It resulted in a 3 person wide line that wrapped 1.5x the length of the main terminal, and when I finally (2.5 hours EARLY!) got to the gate, I had missed the flight by 10 minutes (gate closure, not takeoff). It turned out they had split up the updated gate closure times over a several hour period to randomly make some closures earlier by 10 minutes, later by 5. So tho I was 5 minute searly, I was 5 minutes late.

THEN, they had ONE guy at one of these ticketing booths out on the gate area (concourse I guess) and he was taking 45 minutes PER CUSTOMER to rebook.. THen he stopped and STARTED WALKING AWAY, and a supervisor had to turn him around and literally push back to the ticket counter on the concourse - but with that being done, the ding-aling supervisor didn't step in to help! He just sauntered away..

Instead of non-stop to PDX I hadda go thru DEN the next morn (after sleeping on the fiberglass curved chairs at my gate). They ran it so close I had to sprint at top speed to the gate in Den to get on the plane to PDX.. juuuuuust as the gates were closing..

To add insult to injury, MONTHS later United calls me (after Travelocity refunded half of my ticket for the hassle - thank you Travelocity) and says, "hey, we notice you only were charged for half the ticket - we're gonna bill you for the other half!" and I told them the horror story (above) and he gasped (literally!) and said, "Never mind!" and hung up the phone... heh heh..

B) I had an incident where I got off the plane, took those mobile expando-shuttles, got right to baggage claim (I'm a fast walker/light jogger in and out of airports) , and waited waited waited for my luggage. Finally after 45 minutes, they announce that our flight's baggage had been set aside in a corner of baggage claim. No intervening announcements. I flipped my burger and asked a united baggage claims representeative what the h**l was going on and why did they wait so long to announce it and she claimed they had every ten minutes - ohhhh no they didn't .. and I said she was an effing liar trying to cover her/their hineys for negligence. We got into it, backie forthie , and other staff came out, and a crowd formed an outer ring around us. The yelling and commotion built up on BOTH sides (not just me). One guy was kinda big and I could feel my arm twitching ready to punch him (I realized it would be bad, but I detest being continuously lied to by an ever increasing group of "staff). Anyhow the original baggage claim woman was yelling at me as she withdrew to a door that blended in with the wall and disappeared. We were all silent for about 5-10 seconds, and my brother in law says, to break the silence, to me, "Down boy".. hah hah hah!

C) And there are others..oh so many. The last time - 18 months ago, they changed the departure gate FOUR TIMES, with the last of the four being THE ORIGINAL GATE. We were being ping-ponged back and forth, back and forth. I finally very loudly exclaimed my dismay about the fiasco that all the waiting passengers hear, and LAUGHED ABOUT, and the gate staff heard as well. How does an airline that has been operating there for soooooo long fluff that stuff up?

I sincerely wish United improves their operations at Dulles, and that this investment is applied WISELY to help that out. Of this I am very sincere. I'm not a business traveler so I guess I apply a lower bar to my tolerance of the serial absurdity of that airline at that airport. It's just wierd.

They screwed us flight crews too, especially when we would do a tail swap. Even WE didn't know which gate to be, so of course we'd have to buy that delay and as the lone FA on an RJ, some understandably irate pax. I encouraged pax to speak out to United about that.

I have sent United letters about that. But I appreciate your experience from the staffing side Larry.

It was the least I could do. I became a flight attendant as a joke but had experience in the Air Transportation field in the USAF. I figured this would be my way of sticking it to the airlines for me having shitty experiences. It was fun while it lasted.

Critical design flaw for all 3 terminal concepts: Terminal Connector is not a loop.
snow
James Cox 2
Why is this a flaw? DEN and ATL use a similar design just fine and they are much busier airports than Dulles.

Well, I guess that just confirms my last sentence in my long comment... Something is WEIRD about the Untited/Dulles lashup. It just ain't right. I wish I really knew why, I wish I really knew how, but I don't.
