Hear This Intense Declassified Recording Of F-14s Shooting Down Libyan MiG-23s
Although it’s more audio than video, it’s fascinating to hear the tension as a pair F-14 Tomcats intercept and engage a pair of Libyan MiG-23 Floggers over the Gulf of Sidra. Small segments have been released before of the historical 1989 shoot-down, but this release includes the entire intercept leading up to the dogfight. Dogfight? Hardly.
Both Libyan pilots might as well have declared they were on a suicide mission as they continued to approach the F-14s while the U.S. pilots repeatedly gave them the "benefit of the doubt".
The Libyan military should have left the pilots to swim home as punishment for such stupidity!

First question ? Was this engagement in international airspace ? What ICAO rules were appropriate - I do not recall hearing in the transcription whether there was any "hailing" on the two frequencies we must "hail" and "respond" on, in international airspace.
Second question. Did I miss something...or was something edited out ? I didn't hear any TAR alarms going off (for most of you, I guess I have to explain that TAR stands for "TARGET AQUISITION RADAR". Did either of the "aggressor aircraft" "light up" our boys?
Third question: Speeds and altitudes. Dogfight ? Did I hear correctly that there was almost a MILE of vertical separation between our boys and the 'agressor' while the agressors were just crusing around? Jinking ? Course changes of the aggressor, but altitude changes ?
Finally...Libyans ? Driving modern high performance kerosene burners ? Govorete Po Russkia Yazika ?
