Airlines Cut Boeing 747s From Asia-Pacific Networks
The long reign of the Boeing 747-400 on intercontinental routes is coming to an end, and nowhere is this more apparent than on transpacific flights. 747 is a great plane. I used it several times on my trips and this is probably the best plane to go through the turbulence.Decently comfortable (certainly much more than 777), this is one of my favorite ones.Well, the fuel consumption will probably cause the companies to retire it, but 747 stays as one of the best plane in the aviation history.
Well, with this happening, and lackluster sales of the 748, I just kinda think this is the death knell for anything with 4 engines, at least as far as pax operations go. Personally, other than a limited market and showing off oil money in the mid East, the 380 is not far behind.

Oh, I think some will be retired from pax as they are but with so much cargo opportunity around, it will be awhile before the go to the desert. As you say Quantas is still using them, primarily on that DFW all the way down under as they are the only thing with the range. As DFW gets qualified for the 380's later this year, they may supplant that or they just may do away with the non stop altogether. I haven't heard anything number wise lately. It will be interesting to see how it all plays out. It is just funny to see that it's own stablemate, the 777 has killed it and the 767, not to mention the 757 lost out in there somewhere.
