Lockheed C-130 Hercules (92-0547)
"Roller Four Seven" off and climbing from16R.
Comments
Two High Rollers Hercs took off at the same time but they were departing on separate missions. Roller Four Seven was the second of the two.
Hi Gary, is it usual for departures off that runway to bank at that altitude? Maybe it's part of the SID (Standard Instrument Departure). In any case, it certainly makes for a spectacular shot!...Cheers from 34S 151E!
Nice one, Gary!
Hi, Greg. Thanks for the compli. (Wave)
Hey, Chris, howyadoin'? TY to you also. And to answer your question ... No, it isn't. Usually just straight out. I was standing on airport grounds just southwest of the 16R-34L / 7-25 intersection as it rotated and when I saw it bank so suddenly I was rather surprised. There was no wind. it continued this bank for a few seconds after this shot and then came level and continued the climb. After it went by me it banked slightly left and resumed a departure on the runway heading. The only reason I can think of was that it might have been just a bit too close behind the previous Herc. It was a MITO takeoff but they really were quite close and maybe the pilot wanted a bit of separation margin. My other thought was that there may have been some vortex from the previous Herc because, as I said, they really were quite close.
