Nice shot from Cairns of the 4 engined Rolls Royce Dart cargo workhorse with a 25,000 pound payload.

A blast from the past
I wonder if there are any still flying in 2021?

Thanks...

Those were the days my friend, we thought they'd never end ...

Known in the RAF as the Whistling Tit it was a triumph of drag over thrust, good for transporting ping pong balls over a short distance.

With those Dart's - 4 no less - it must have been a real screamer at takeoff.
Donn Avers
Zantops or it's precursor used to fly these out of Willow Run airport, KYIP near Detroit in the 60's. It was one of the loudest aircraft I ever heard (high pitched scream). That was until I was on the south side of a north bound departing Panavia Tornado.

Paul, there's 5 in museums and 2 in storage - none airworthy. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Armstrong_Whitworth_AW.660_Argosy

I remember seeing them go over occasionally in my teens. Certainly a distinctive sound

When I passed out of Basic Training many years ago I am now 68 and joined the RAF at the age of 17 we had an Argos fly past. The chaps that passed out previously had the Red Arrow's who must have been training nearby.
I was not disappointed at all. They were nicknamed the flying "Nipple" due to the radar their domme.
The sound was great.
I wonder if there is an example still flying today. I hope that one at least has been preserved.
A wonderful photograph.

A fantastic photograph that brings back memories.
At RAF my passing out parade from Basic Training a very long time ago I am 68 now, we had an Argosy do the flypast.
The sound was great. I went to work on Lightning MK3's and MK5's after attending RAF Cosford for technical training.
They were used for airfield navigation aids calibration. They did have the nickname of the flying "Nipple" do to the shape of their radome.
Thank you for bringing back memories.
