L-39 Crashes at Quad Cities Airshow
I witnessed this crash today. The pilot and aircraft were part of the Hopper Jet team. They had just completed a scissors cross maneuver when the aircraft did not recover from a roll and descended into the ground approximately a half mile from show center. Video of the crash can be seen here: http://youtu.be/XjY6RIe-S5E My heart sank when this happened, but the worst part was watching his teammates circling over the crash site. I am also posting a photo of the aircraft as it took off on… (qctimes.com) المزيد...Sort type: [Top] [Newest]
Good Lord, that must have been horrible to witness.
I was surprised to hear about this. My original plans were to go to this airshow and take my 7 y.o. son. I'm glad I decided to take him to the Mizzou football game instead. I don't know how I would have explained such a tragic event to him.
R.I.P. to a great pilot.
But I have to question why they were flying if the remnants of Isaac were still in the area. Not trying to assign fault, but NTSB may determine weather was a factor. We'll have to wait and see.

As a side note on this story, the History Channel had a show last November 28th on Pawn Stars where the L39 was the star of the segment. "The Pawn Stars prepare for a dogfight when their radar locks onto an L39 Albatros fighter jet. Used by the Soviets to train their pilots, can Rick and Chumlee fly away with this Cold War era prize, or will they get shot down before they make it back to base?" Well they brought in their expert and they thought better of buying the aircraft because of ancillary costs involved in keeping the plane until they could find a buyer. They blurred the tail number of the aircraft so I don't know if it could be the same plane.

Such a shame. I can only imagine how the family feels.
