Cessna Caravan (N982TP)
Comments
I have often wondered why they did not design this craft with retractable landing gear. Just seems to make sense to me.
Vinny: If this airplane had retractable gear, it would preclude the installation of a cargo pod on the belly. The cargo pod is most popular option offered by Cessna. The lead customer for the Caravan was Federal Express. Fed Ex is the lead customer for the new 408 (twin engine turboprop, also with fixed landing gear).
Another option is seaplane floats, which would be a bear to accommodate retractable gear.
Single engine Cessna with retractable gear (none are in production now) like the 210 Centurion and 177 Cardinal RG had wheel wells in the sides of the tailcone. This robbed space in the baggage area behind the back seats, which was often a bad deal.
